Unofficial painting guide: Skeleton Warriorold bone and rusty armour

Bones are the friendliest thing to learn on: one base, one wash, one drybrush. Rust and dirt only help.

Bones

  1. Base
    BoneUshabti Bone

All bones. A bone spray primer does this in seconds.

  2. Shade
    Brown washAgrax Earthshade

Wash all the bones. Let it pool.

  3. Highlight
    Pale boneScreaming Skull

Drybrush the bones lightly. The skull and ribs get the most.

02

Armour and blades

  1. Base
    SteelLeadbelcher

    Helmet, armour scraps and swords.

  2. Shade
    Brown washAgrax Earthshade

Brown, not black: it looks old.

  3. Layer
    Rust orangeRyza Rust (dry)

Stipple rust in the low parts.

03

Shield

  1. Base
    Deep redKhorne Red

Shield face. Faded colours suit undead.

  2. Highlight
    RedMephiston Red

    Scratches and edge chips.

04

Brass trim

  1. Base
    BrassBalthasar Gold

    Shield rims and buckles.

  2. Shade
    VerdigrisNihilakh Oxide (technical)

Optional: a little in the recesses.

05

Eye glow

  1. Base
    Glow greenMoot Green

A dot in each eye socket. Optional, but it makes them look alive... ish.

06

Base

  1. Base
    Dark earthRhinox Hide

    Graveyard dirt.

  2. Layer
    KhakiBaneblade Brown

    Drybrush.

Tips

Quick or display

Two ways to paint it, depending on how long you want to spend.

Tabletop, fast

Get it on the table tonight

  1. Bone primer, brown wash on everything, steel on the metal. Tabletop ready in three steps.
  2. A tone-style wash dipped over the whole model works brilliantly on skeletons.

Display level

When you want people to stop and look

  1. Glaze thin green or sepia into the deepest bones for an aged, mouldy look.
  2. Paint simple heraldry on the shields: one stripe of a second colour reads from across the table.

Other directions

Same model, your look

Your miniature, your rules. Two alternative schemes that use the same steps.

Fresh bleached bone

Prime white, sepia wash, white drybrush. Cleaner and brighter.

Ghostly

Drybrush pale blue-grey over the bones and use a teal glow in the eyes.
